Volunteers

Volunteers are the backbone of the CLYLP statewide operation. In 2010, over 200 volunteers, including many CLYLP alumni, formed the bedrock of CLYLP efforts contributing an estimated 25,000 hours of volunteer time. Volunteers coordinate and staff all of the programs, including all logistics, and fundraising activities. Thus, the CLYLP model promotes and provides leadership development directly to students who participate in CLYLP programs, but also year round to the hundreds of volunteers throughout California who work with CLYLP.
Whether you’re an alumnus or supporter of the CLYLP, you can be part of a special team committed to strengthening the network and capacity of “California’s Future Leaders.” Below are several ways you can get involved.
Sacramento Summer Leadership Conference
Staff applications for the 29th Annual Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Project (CLYLP) Sacramento Leadership Conference are now being accepted. A team of support staff, peer counselors and facilitators will be selected to provide mentorship and supervision to one hundred twenty (120) applicants who will be selected to participate in the summer conference. To ensure full availability and accessibility for the student participants and conference team, all participating conference staff will be required to attend a mandatory orientation and stay on site in Sacramento for the duration of the conference. The application deadline for the CLYLP Sacramento Leadership Conference Staff is early May. Click here for full information

Regional Institutes
- Los Angeles Institute - The CLYLP’s Los Angeles Institute (LAI) is an intensive three-day leadership training conference held at the University of California Los Angeles that was developed in 2006 in response to the overwhelming number of applicants from the Los Angeles region to the Sacramento CLYLP Conference. This year’s LAI will take place on August 19-21, 2011 at UCLA. To serve on the planning committee or volunteer for LAI, please send an e-mail to lai@clylp.org.
- San Joaquin Valley Institute - The San JoaquĂn Valley Institute (SJVI) was established in 1999 by a CLYLP board member to serve high school seniors and juniors in the San Joaquin Valley. In 2005, in an effort to serve more students in the region, the SJVI became an official program of the CLYLP and was extended from a one-day to a three-day institute. The three day conference will be held at Fresno Pacific University in Fresno, June 17-19, 2011. To serve on the planning committee or volunteer for the SJVI, please send an e-mail to sjvi@clylp.org.
Scholarship Selection Committee
- The Roberto Gracia Memorial Scholarship is named after one of the CLYLP’s most dedicated volunteers who was committed to developing the leadership potential of California’s youth. These scholarships are awarded annually to incoming freshman, transfer students and graduate students based on: 1) three essays that address their community engagement following the summer program in Sacramento or at the regional institutes in Fresno or Los Angeles; educational and career goals; and an idea for a bill or law; 2) financial need; and 3) a review of the applicant’s resume and recommendation letters. Members of this committee read and score these applications and select recipients. To volunteer for this committee, send an e-mail to scholarship@clylp.org.
